International Action Day, 21st March 2017

The idea

"Monologues across the Aegean Sea" is a collection of 28 testimonies of unaccompanied refugee children from Syria, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, Morocco and Egypt. These children were forced to leave their homeland and arrived alone in Greece, crossing the Aegean Sea.

The "Monologues across the Aegean Sea" is the result of a series of workshops that took place in accommodation centres for unaccompanied refugee children in the cities of Athens and Patras in Greece, from April to July 2016, as part of the project “It could be me - It could be you”, an awareness raising project on refugees and human rights using drama and theatre techniques. The project has been organized and implemented since 2015 in Greece by the Hellenic Theatre/Drama & Education Network (TENet-Gr) in partnership with UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency.

The aim of the action "Monologues across the Aegean Sea" was to record the difficulties that unaccompanied children have gone through and the challenges they still experienced and also to bring to surface/highlight what these children love, hope and dream.

The publication

The 28 testimonies imprinted in the special-edition book "Monologues across the Aegean Sea: the journey and dreams of unaccompanied refugee children", published in Greek and in English in October 2016, by the Hellenic Theatre/Drama & Education Network and the UNHCR.

The book is available here!
It is free for educational and artistic purposes (not for commercial use)

The proposed actions for schools and youth groups

We invite schools, youth groups and artists to translate these monologues in their own language and to use them to raise awareness, empathy and solidarity, in any way they consider appropriate.

Inspired by the refugee children's stories, let's use our imagination to create events, theatrical performances, videos, radio narratives etc

The International Action Day, March 21st, 2017

The Hellenic Theatre/Drama & Education Network and the UNHCR Greece have set March 21st, 2017, as the International Action Day for the "Monologues across the Aegean Sea."

Artistic events, performances, public readings, school festivals and youth events will take place around the world on the said date.

The call is supported by the International Drama/Theatre & Education Association -IDEA.

Let us share...
Let's all of us be part of this celebration, by pursuing initiatives for actions on March 21st, and let's share the results of our work, by sending translations, photographs or video links to
monologues@theatroedu.gr.  A specially created website will host all contributions.

Let's try to make the voice of children who have lost their childhood because of war and poverty, to be heard loudly, through the voices of other children, who have the same age with them!
